Has hiring etiquette all but now disappeared with online advertisements being posted, sometimes multiple times for vacancies? The majority of candidates we speak with, up to CEO level, never receive any response at all when applying direct, which is surely damaging to both large and small company reputations.

So here are five tips for when you are applying for your next role to try and elicit a positive response;

  • Your CV and LinkedIn profile are critical in the selection process so make sure they are synonymous with each other and up to date.
  • Use the same phrases and language on your CV as in the “must haves” listed in the Job Description.
  • Keep your application as short as possible and simplistic.
  • You don’t know who will be doing the initial screening, so don’t use jargon or colloquialisms in your application.
  • If you don’t have a response, use your LinkedIn first connection contacts in the hiring company to seek information.

Southgate Consulting offers CV and LinkedIn re-writing and evaluation to all candidates who are seeking career moves. Please contact us for more information.

Having just read an article published by Automotive Management, it is great to see that in a recent survey, Automotive has come second in the most attractive sector to work in with a 5% increase from 2021. It’s great to see that a large percentage of younger employees want to join this sector due to a desire to work in a sector that is making “an impact in both the physical and digital world”. With the continual push towards EV and “smarter” vehicles, Automotive can definitely offer that and more!

  1. Ensure your skills match is really evident and concisely stated on your CV under headings of Responsibilities and Achievements for each recent role.
  2. Don’t give any more information or detail than is necessary for the role for which you are applying. Too much information is a big “no-no”.
  3. Are you ready for answering competency based questions as part of the process?
  4. Research the company and people working there and how you believe you would fit the company culture well.
  5. Make sure you are easily contactable for the recipient of your application to respond.
  6. Don’t try to by-pass the preferred recruitment process for any particular application.

Delighted to report that 2022 has already started very well for Southgate Consulting, with a number of Director level positions solely briefed to us, predominantly within the UK Automotive Retail space. Working to specific, tight candidate specifications our confidential and targeted approach ensures clients are met with a shortlist of pre-qualified and relevant individuals quickly and effectively. We continue to work in a bespoke, selective and consultative way with senior hires ensuring a very high level of success in the unadvertised job market protecting both Client and Candidate integrity at all times.

Another fantastic Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC, we have certainly missed such events over the last 18 months. It was fantastic to walk around and see some of the new products and companies coming to market over the next couple of years with some really innovative and exciting electric models planned, but most importantly to get back out and speaking to people face to face!

We enjoy recruitment challenges at Southgate Consulting, really getting to know client requirements well and matching candidates against the brief as closely as possible.

The thrill for us is in finding the solution to a challenging recruitment brief and a lot of time and research goes into this. This is Executive Search, driven by the client, retained to one provider and ensuring time after time the response is relevant and of the highest quality.

Professional recruitment requires a deep understanding of client culture and candidate fit. This is only acquired by working closely with decision makers when preparing the brief, and then sticking with it.

So two candidates on a shortlist are better than a stream of CVs. I think we all agree with that. Industry knowledge, the ability to reach candidates through reputation and response time are the factors which are key in successful Executive Search. We start with a blank sheet each time and ensure there is a bespoke approach to our final, successful result time and time again. That is what makes it an art rather than a science, which is why Southgate Consulting continues to work tirelessly in promoting this method of recruitment.

Having researched the automotive press recently, it is fantastic to see how well March & April went for the retail industry, hearing some great success stories since businesses have re-opened their doors. This has also been reflected in the recruitment market as Southgate Consulting has been working at full capacity on several confidential Senior Director and Management assignments, both nationally and internationally.

We are now seeing key Clients move away from generic advertising of roles to a much more targeted search approach for high quality candidates, allowing a confidential, subtle, and direct shortlist of pre-screened candidates. This is the approach Southgate Consulting prides itself on and we have been delivering quick and accurate recruitment solutions to all our clients throughout the most recent lockdown.

If you have a recruitment requirement needing a consultative and guaranteed approach, why not give us a call?
